Style vs Fashion

What's the difference between style and fashion? Are they the same thing? Does it matter?

No, they're not the same thing. And yes, it does matter.

To have a sense of fashion is to know which trends are big right now, to know which are the hot colors of the season, to be the first to sport that unique look that everyone will want to have a few weeks or months later.

To be fashionable is to be in the "now" just a moment before everyone else. What's fashionable today, may not be fashionable tomorrow.

To have style is another thing entirely. Fashion changes, style doesn't. If fashion is about a constantly renewed "now", style is about the ever-present "always". To be stylish is a character trait, something that doesn't change regardless of whether the a certain fashion trend is up or down.

You can look at the film stars of years ago like Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn or Sophia Loren and instantly recognize their style. They would be stylish today, no matter what the "in" look is.

If fashion tells you what to wear, style then is how you wear it. A fashion trend is something out there for anyone to grab. Style is entirely of your own making. It's how you -- and only you -- put together a look.

Somebody with a poor sense of style could wear the latest fashion, and not look good. And it's also true that someone with great style could put together an outfit around jeans and white shirt and exude grace and glamour.

So which is better? Why both, of course.
